Annie Besant had succeeded Madame Blavatsky as the Outer Head (OH) of the Esoteric Section (or School, or Eastern School)(ES) conjointly with W.Q. Judge. From the conflict between Besant and Judge, each emerged with rival claims. The ES associated with the Theosophical Society (Adyar) accepted that Besant was the OH. The ES Associated with the Theosophical Society (America) accepted that Judge was the OH, and thereafter had its own subsequent lineage of succession.
Besant died on September 20, 1933, and by her appointment, Leadbeater succeeded as OH.
Following Leadbeater’s death, and by his appointment, Curuppumullage Jinarajadasa (1875-1953) (who became President of the Theosophical Society in 1945) succeeded as OH.
Then, by Jinarajadasa’s appointment, Nilakanta Sri Ram (1889-1973) (who became President of the Theosophical Society in 1953).
Sri Ram was succeeded, by his appointment, as OH of the ES by Iqbal Kishen Taimni (1898-1978).
Taimni was succeeded by Radha Burnier (1923-2013), daughter of Nilakanta Sri Ram, succeeded to the office (and became President of the Theosophical Society in 1980).
The documention which follows relates to the appointment of Radha Burnier to succeed I.K. Taimni, and provides some slight insight into the working of the ES.
Following Mrs Burnier’s death, it was discovered that she had not, as required by the rules of the ES, nominated a successor.
Accordingly, it fell to the Council of the ES to choose a new OH and it chose Linda Olivera (President of the Australian Section of the Theosophical Society) who is currently the OH of the ES.
